Summary

This article analyzes the rise of the Swedish wine industry since Sweden’s official EU recognition as a wine country in 1999. Institutional anchoring followed with the establishment of trade organizations and recent professionalization through SBOV. Central is the use of PIWI grapes (fungus-resistant varieties), particularly Solaris, which reduces the need for fungicides and allows reliable ripening in a cool climate. The number of commercial vineyards has grown to around 50 businesses with approximately 200 hectares of plantings. The sector positions itself through sustainability, biodynamics, and gastronomic potential. Climate change and potential relaxation of direct sales rules within the Systembolaget monopoly act as potential growth accelerators. Sweden is thus developing from an experimental niche to a strategically positioned cool-climate producer with international ambitions.

Our take

The analysis shows that Sweden primarily focuses on technological adaptation rather than historical legitimacy. The strong emphasis on PIWI varieties is agronomically logical but also implies reputational risks due to the lack of tradition. Climate change is mainly presented as an opportunity, while structural uncertainties are only briefly discussed. A deep economic reflection on scalability and export is also missing. Comparison with the UK is instructive, but Sweden has not yet sharply defined its USP. Strategically, however, the combination of sustainability and experimentation is coherent.
